National Back to School Month

National Back to School Month

The days of summer are numbered. As the month of August marches on, shorter days and cooler temperatures (hopefully) are on the way.

The month of August is also recognized as National Back to School Month in the United States when families kick into high gear for the upcoming academic year.

The start of school can bring a mix of both excitement and anxiety for young students – making new friends, navigating the school building, getting to know a new teacher – the first day of school is a major milestone for many.

For working mothers, the transition back to school can be particularly challenging, as balancing work, school-related responsibilities, transportation, and childcare can be exhausting. It can also affect career advancement, when balancing school activities and calendars conflict with work opportunities, often taking a toll on women’s mental and emotional well-being.

What can help? Strategies for both the workplace and the family can blunt the stress facing working moms (and parents), including:

WORKPLACE

  • Flexible work options such as remote work, shorter work weeks, or flexible hours
  • Childcare support including on-site childcare, subsidies, or partnerships with providers
  • Ensuring culture of support for working parents
  • Providing access to mental health resources

HOME AND FAMILY

  • Establish routines such as preparation the night before (set out clothes, school supplies)
  • Communicate openly about any fears or concerns; validate feelings
  • Ensure self-care – both through extracurricular activities and fun as a family

WITH CHILDREN

  • Create a supportive environment including organized studying space
  • Celebrate small “wins” to boost confidence
  • Encourage positive self-talk; “I can do this” or “I’m doing the best I can”
