The Chrysalis Foundation received a $10,000 grant from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino through its 2007 Community Betterment Grant Program. Grant funds will help to support the Chrysalis After-School program. This year, more than 190 projects shared in funding allocations from Prairie Meadows. Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grants are allocated to four categories: arts & culture, economic development, education, and human services. Since 1995 Prairie Meadows has contributed more than $362 million to promote education, economic development, agriculture, jobs and tourism in Iowa. This is the fourth grant to Chrysalis from Prairie Meadows!

2008 SOLUTIONS LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST A SUCCESS!
Thanks to everyone who attended this year's event at the Iowa State Capitol. Over 75 people were in attendance and spoke to legislators about the importance of supporting women and girls in our state.

If you missed the breakfast, this year's Chrysalis policy "SOLUTIONS" are:

FOR GIRLS: EXPAND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Increase exposure to enhanced education and enrichment to improve academic success, emotional health, and physical well-being to assure successful and productive futures for all girls.

  • Support the Iowa Afterschool Alliance request for $6 million toward after-school programs with 25% dedicated to programs serving middle and high school youth.
  • Support the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women request toward increasing the participation of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.


FOR WOMEN: IMPROVE FINANCIAL STABILITY through CAREER and WORKFORCE SKILLS
Improve women's success in the workforce by providing education, skills training, and supports necessary to assure preparation for, and access to, high-demand jobs and careers.
  • Develop comprehensive workforce skill training to assure long-term economic stability through financial literacy, post-secondary education, and pathways to high-demand, high-paying jobs.
  • Assure work supports including benefit enrollment, quality child care, and networks which enhance workforce and career success.

CELEBRITY SERVER EVENT RAISES BIG "TIPS" for CHRYSALIS!

The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO)-Central Iowa hosted the inaugural "Celebrity Server Event", to benefit the Chrysalis Foundation on February 7th, 2008, at the Foxboro Conference Center. Funds raised from the event will support Chrysalis programs. NAWBO works to strengthen the capacity of its members and to promote economic development.

The event featured local "celebrities" (business leaders) who invited dinner guests and "worked" to raise "tips" to benefit the Foundation. Top server of the evening was Laura Bernstein, raising over $800 (Laura is the owner of VisionPoint and she sponsored the table)! The event also featured an auction, hosted by Kelly Daugherty of Daugherty Real Estate and Appraisers.

CHRYSALIS FOUNDATION PRESENTS "NETWORKING & NEGOTIATIONS" EVENT
The Chrysalis Foundation is hosting "Networking and Negotiations" on Monday, March 3rd from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. at Tero International, 1840 North West 118 Street, Suite 107, in Clive. This free event is part of the Chrysalis Business Partner Program, organized in 1999, to unite local business leaders interested in supporting women and girls.

"This is first in a series of Chrysalis Business Partner Programs," says event chair, Nicole Hinton. "Each program will provide opportunity for networking and strengthening strategic business skills - all while strengthening the success of the girls and women Chrysalis supports."

Tero International's Deb Rinner will give her highly effective presentation on "win/win" negotiations. This presentation is generously donated by Tero due to the company's interest in a successful business community and in the Chrysalis' mission.

CHRYSALIS CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH AND FOUNDER LOUISE ROSENFIELD NOUN
During the month of March, also known as Women's History month, Chrysalis will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birthday of our founder, Louise Rosenfield Noun. 100th Birthday Celebration events will be held throughout the month (and into early April) at various locations. An open invitation is extended to you to attend a special community celebration on Monday, March 31, 2008 at Moberg Gallery, 2921 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines, from 5 - 7 p.m. To attend this event, click here.

Chrysalis After-school PROGRAMS ARE ACTIVE!
Thanks to your support, Chrysalis is funding 23 programs: 15 middle school, 7 elementary and one high school pilot program. Chrysalis After-School programs meet on a weekly basis promoting self sufficiency, economic independence and leadership.

During February CAS groups are researching, studying and creating activities on topics including nutrition and physical well being, philanthropy (through fundraising activities), self-esteem, leadership, women's history and book clubs!

Chrysalis is grateful to the Facilitators at each school who do a wonderful job supporting the girls through their program activities and enhance their own skills through continued professional youth development training!
