Issue 6, Volume VII In this newsletter: NEW FACE AT CHRYSALIS! We're delighted to welcome Leslie Garman to Chrysalis as the Director of Development and Communications! Leslie comes to Chrysalis Foundation with over 20 years fundraising, volunteer organization, and communications experience, launching her career with Chrysalis on October 9. Early in her career, Leslie worked in Northwest Iowa with the American Heart Association, an organization with which she worked for over 18 years (until 2004) as the Metro Executive Director for Des Moines. You may have seen Leslie's work at familiar events including the Des Moines Heart Ball, Go Red For Women, Heart Walk and Jump Rope For Heart. Most recently Leslie worked as the Development Director for the House of Mercy, where she re-energized the board of directors and created a new signature event, "Helping Lives Bloom," raising over $100,000 in its first year. Leslie lives in Urbandale with her husband Brian Garman and two children. You can look forward to hearing from Leslie in the near future! Joining us for this lively discussion will be Shayla From, an energetic volunteer and actively engaged in the community; Denise Aikoriegie, who moved from the professional business world to direct a new and expanding nonprofit organization; and Liz Garst, who is moving from a family-owned business and land ownership to new and different ventures. Come share coffee and conversation on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30 a.m. in the Waveland Hall at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue. There is no charge to attend, but please let us know you're coming by clicking here! Created in 1998 in response to a gift from donor Melva Bucksbaum, Chrysalis After-School serves hundreds of girls (averaging 35-40 girls per school) during weekly meetings at school sites across the metro area. Girls are provided with new opportunities to experience a range of activities intended to assure their school and life success, economic independence, and leadership abilities. Through this program, girls also explore college and career options, gain computer and technical skills, share outdoor activities (ropes course, horseback riding, hiking), explore women's history, and visit local historic, arts, and museum venues. Chrysalis After-School programs are held on-site at various schools, and always welcome guest speakers, training/learning opportunities, and volunteers! To learn more about how you can get involved with a program near you, contact the Foundation office by calling 515-255-1853. (FYI - Chrysalis is now part of the Iowa Afterschool Alliance, a statewide network of "out-of-school" program providers that is working on program quality, shared learning, sustainability, and positive results for youth - watch for more information on this work in future newsletters!) Are you (like me) a "Baby Boomer" (born between 1945 and 1965)? If you're experiencing a "milestone birthday," did you know:

(*from Reinventing Fundraising: Realizing the Potential of Women's Philanthropy, Sondra C. Shaw and Martha A.
