NEW FACE AT CHRYSALIS!
We're delighted to welcome Leslie Garman to Chrysalis as the Director of Development and Communications! Leslie comes to Chrysalis Foundation with over 20 years fundraising, volunteer organization, and communications experience, launching her career with Chrysalis on October 9.

Early in her career, Leslie worked in Northwest Iowa with the American Heart Association, an organization with which she worked for over 18 years (until 2004) as the Metro Executive Director for Des Moines. You may have seen Leslie's work at familiar events including the Des Moines Heart Ball, Go Red For Women, Heart Walk and Jump Rope For Heart.

Most recently Leslie worked as the Development Director for the House of Mercy, where she re-energized the board of directors and created a new signature event, "Helping Lives Bloom," raising over $100,000 in its first year. Leslie lives in Urbandale with her husband Brian Garman and two children. You can look forward to hearing from Leslie in the near future!

"CELEBRATING THE STAGES OF LIFE" AT NOVEMBER COFFEE WITH CHRYSALIS
"Coffee with Chrysalis" will finish the year's events with a gifted panel of women whose life "stages" range from content with life, to curious for new possibilities, to continuing to add meaning. Led by moderator Mary Brubaker, the panel will examine the stages and options which touch each of us as we enjoy new experiences, look for more opportunities, or age with attitude!

Joining us for this lively discussion will be Shayla From, an energetic volunteer and actively engaged in the community; Denise Aikoriegie, who moved from the professional business world to direct a new and expanding nonprofit organization; and Liz Garst, who is moving from a family-owned business and land ownership to new and different ventures.

Come share coffee and conversation on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30 a.m. in the Waveland Hall at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Avenue. There is no charge to attend, but please let us know you're coming by clicking here!

CHRYSALIS AFTER-SCHOOL LAUNCHES ITS 9th YEAR!
Since it began, Chrysalis After-School programs have touched the lives of nearly 4,000 local girls, from elementary to high school age! This year, the Chrysalis Foundation invested $185,000 in this project, which has expanded from its original work in middle schools to now include 8 elementary, 14 middle, and 3 high schools.

Created in 1998 in response to a gift from donor Melva Bucksbaum, Chrysalis After-School serves hundreds of girls (averaging 35-40 girls per school) during weekly meetings at school sites across the metro area. Girls are provided with new opportunities to experience a range of activities intended to assure their school and life success, economic independence, and leadership abilities. Through this program, girls also explore college and career options, gain computer and technical skills, share outdoor activities (ropes course, horseback riding, hiking), explore women's history, and visit local historic, arts, and museum venues.

Chrysalis After-School programs are held on-site at various schools, and always welcome guest speakers, training/learning opportunities, and volunteers! To learn more about how you can get involved with a program near you, contact the Foundation office by calling 515-255-1853.

(FYI - Chrysalis is now part of the Iowa Afterschool Alliance, a statewide network of "out-of-school" program providers that is working on program quality, shared learning, sustainability, and positive results for youth - watch for more information on this work in future newsletters!)

"BOOMER" BUZZ…

Are you (like me) a "Baby Boomer" (born between 1945 and 1965)? If you're experiencing a "milestone birthday," did you know:

  • At 50, you can make "catch-up" contributions to your 401(k), IRA, or other similar retirement plan. At 55, you can withdraw savings from a 401(k) without penalty if you retire or leave a job (but, you'll pay taxes on withdrawals unless you roll them into another 401(k) or IRA). At 59-1/2, you can withdraw from an IRA or 401(k) plan without penalty, whether you're working or not (you'll pay taxes on withdrawals unless you roll them into another 401(k) or IRA). At 62, you can begin collecting Social Security (but if you wait, your benefit will be higher - you must start at age 70). At 65 you are eligible for Medicare.
  • At 70-1/2, you must begin withdrawals from your 401(k) or traditional IRA (but not Roth IRA) - if you don't start withdrawing (on these or other "required minimum distribution" plans) you incur a tax penalty (50%!) on the balance not withdrawn…

Here are some interesting attributes* of women "Baby Boomers" --

  • We are the best educated generation of all time. Our education translates to experience in the workforce and higher salaries. We have a small number of children in comparison to earlier generations. We represent an enormous number of wills in the next decade. We came of age during the Vietnam War and are acutely aware of society's ills. We are most likely to give locally where we can see the results of our gift. We are poised to be the generation of givers most generous to non-profits due to the fortunes we're projected to own and our social conscience.
  • Based on our age, we may be more likely to commit to a large gift over the next ten years.

(*from Reinventing Fundraising: Realizing the Potential of Women's Philanthropy, Sondra C. Shaw and Martha A. Taylor, 1995)

To improve the future in our community, Chrysalis invests in the schools, agencies, and organizations serving women and girls in the metropolitan area. If you'd like to join in this support, please click here!
